What Danger?
While viewing the excellent Menil Collection in Houston, Texas in July 2021, I saw Untitled Blue Monochrome (IKB 42) by Yves Klein. It is a big monochrome block of blue on the wall.
Somewhat regrettably in retrospect, I lacked an appreciation for the piece beyond a simple, “Yes, that is a very pretty blue color.” Last night a friend shared some background info about Yves Klein, his color International Klein Blue, and how he changed the world of art.
While the larger implications of Klein’s impact are still sinking in, I’m struck by how much I myself have thought about the color blue.
Below you can see a quick study of International Klein Blue at the top followed by two of my favorite blues.
Plenty of intention went into my choice of blue paper for my birthday present box. My credit card occasionally puts a smile on my face when I see the bright color as I hand it to the waiter. I’ve written custom themes for software to use blue instead of some other inferior color. The list goes on…
It’s safe to say my favorite color is blue. What does blue mean to you?
